“나는 이 글의 주인공인 WILLIAM 의 엄마이자 태어나서 처음으로 리뷰라는걸 적어보는 학부모입니다.

내가 학교를 다녔던 그 때 부터 지금까지 수십년간 큰 변화없이 일등과 백점만 인정받는 한국 학교의 교육시스템에서 학원과 과외수업에 지쳐서 왜 이걸 해야는지 의문마저 포기한 채 그냥 시키니까 공부하는 척 하루 하루 살았던 보통의 평범한 아이… 그 아이가 바로 내 아이 William 이었다.

특별히 관심있는 분야가 있는것도 아니었고 어떤것에 엄청나고 우수한 자질을 타고난 아이도 아니었다 그러던 아이에게 놀라운 변화가 찾아왔다 꿈을 꾸고, 희망을 갖고 시켜서가 아닌 스스로 원해서 노력 이라는 걸 하기 시작했다. 바로 “The Collegiate Academy” 선생님들을 만나기 시작하면서 부터 말이다.

이 학교의 선생님들은 아이의 성적표와 점수를 먼저 확인하지 않으셨고, 내 아이가 무엇에 관심이있고 어떤 꿈을 가지고 있는지 또 그 꿈을 위해 어떤 노력을 해왔는지 물었고, 꿈을 이룰수있는 매우 구체적인 길을 하나씩 제시해주셨고, 학교수업뿐 아니라 교외 봉사나 대회 활동까지도 아이의 수준에 맞춰서 하나씩 성취해 가는걸 도와주셨다. 처음 인연을 맺은 2017년부터지금까지 그 일련의 시간들은 자연스럽게 꿈의 실현을 위한 밑거름이 되어가고 있었고 이제 곧 11학년이 된다.

좋은 대학보다는 본인이 원하는 전공을 선택해서 원하는 일을 하면서 보람과 행복을 느끼고 더 나아가 누군가에게 도움이 되는 삶을 살수있길 부모라면 누구나 바라는 일이다 나 역시 그런 부모중의 하나였지만 누구나 알다시피 제대로된 길을 알려주는 교육자를 만나기란 보통의 행운으로는 어려운 일인데… 두분의 선생님을 만난건 정말이지 내 아이 인생에서 가장 큰 축복이고 행운이라 생각한다.

코로나로 인해 세상의 학교들이 모두 문을 걸어 잠궈버린 어지러운 상황에서도 흔들림 없이 수업을 진행할수있었던건 스몰 스쿨 시스템의 저력이라 생각되었다.

지금 이순간에도 길을 찾지 못한 아이와 부모님이 있다면, 마음속에 답답함이 있다면 주저말고 문을 두드리라 말하고 싶다. 외롭고 힘든길을 기꺼이 함께 가주실 두분이 반겨주실꺼라 믿는다.

목표가 없던 내 아이에게 꿈을 갖고 노력하고 도전하는 기쁨을 깨우쳐주신 진정한 교육자이신 교장선생님과 조나단 선생님께 이 자리를 빌어 마음 깊이 감사를 전하며 글을 마친다.”
